With industry demand at an all time high for LCO2 vessels with the highest cargo volumes, voestalpine Grobblech presents the most efficient carbon steel solution.
As steel grades like yield type 355 considerably limit the efficiency of tank designs for low pressure application, voestalpine Grobblech established the new concept of F460 TMCP toughcore. By utilising the outstanding combination of strength and fracture mechanic properties at a design temperature of -60 degrees Celsius, even in the heat affected zone, the cargo volume to tank weight ratio can now be maximised without significant changes in hull structure.
The increased ultimate tensile strength of minimum 580 MPa allows for an increased tank capacity of up to 40% with equal material thickness. In line with “economy of scale,” larger vessels come with lower operational costs related to the energy consumption per transported volume unit. This has been evaluated on two different vessel design scenarios by our partner HB Hunte Engineering GmbH.
There are significant advantages which allow for an enhanced economic and ecologic life cycle approach.
Together with the recent development of F550 TMCP toughcore for medium pressure design, voestalpine Grobblech offers a comprehensive portfolio for the aspiring CCUS value chain. With this further step, we are leading the way to remarkably reduced total cost of ownership and enhanced sustainability.
Whatever one pays for a ship with yield type 355 tanks, it is 20% to 40% overpriced compared to a ship with high-strength tanks when calculated over the ship's lifetime.
