The project aimed to decarbonise the port area of Dunkirk in northern France, which accounted for 20% of French industrial CO2 emissions, or more than 16m tonnes, it added in a statement.
Under the plan, GRTgaz would build a 30km onshore pipeline network to transport the CO2 from industrial sites to a compressor station, with Equinor constructing an offshore pipeline linking to underground storage sites off the coast of Norway.
The firms aimed to commission the pipelines following the completion of feasibility and engineering studies.
Earlier this year, GRTgaz launched a call for interest for the so-called GOCO2 project, which involves capturing CO2 from TotalEnergies’ Donges oil refinery and transporting it to storage sites in the North Sea.
