Greek Corinth Pipeworks: Undertakes the Porthos project in the Netherlands

Once operational, the project intends to store CO2 from industry in the port of Rotterdam in empty, undersea depleted North Sea gas fields.

Cenergy Holdings has announced that Corinth Pipeworks , its steel pipe division, has been awarded a contract worth more than €30 million to manufacture and supply high-frequency welded (HFW) straight-seam steel pipes for the Porthos , carbon dioxide transport and storage project. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a low-cost method of preventing large volumes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere by permanently storing it in underground geological structures. The CCS method is a critical technology that seeks to contribute to the achievement of climate goals, especially for the short-term reduction of CO2 emissions from industry. Once operational, the Porthos project aims to store CO2 from industry in the port of Rotterdam in empty, undersea depleted North Sea gas fields. The 16-inch-diameter, 22-kilometer-long subsea pipeline will include an anti-corrosion, heat-insulating liner, as well as a concrete outer casing (CWC). At the same time it aims to transport CO2 from a compression station to the P18-A platform in the North Sea . The existing gas platform P18-A will be reused for CO2 storage. This platform will be equipped with the necessary equipment to transport the collected CO2 to the injection wells. The pipes will be manufactured at Corinth Pipeworks ' facilities in Greece and installation work will begin on schedule within 2026 . Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies can play an important role in meeting global energy and climate goals. The European Union declared the Porthos project a "Project of Common Interest" and allocated a grant of 102 million euros for its implementation. Over the last 15 years, Corinth Pipeworks has built CO2 pipelines with a total length of over 1,150 km. Its experience in projects in North America and now in subsea projects in Europe demonstrates its readiness to contribute to the development of many similar projects around the world.
