Italian plan for CCS infrastructure including greek Prino

Platform "Α" in Prino.

Many countries and companies are currently considering starting the new and promising CCS sector, although the cost of sequestering CO2 is still high and needs to be reduced through economies of scale and innovation, as happened with wind and solar energy in the past. Italy decides to make the first step.

Balkan Green Energy reports that in the revised National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), Italy set a target of sequestering 3.6 million tons of CO2 per year and storing it in underground locations, such as depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Adriatic Sea. In addition to its national target, earlier this year Italy presented to the European Commission a CCS initiative with Greece and France. The three countries aim to build the first CCS infrastructure and export between them.

In Prino the Italian CO2

According to the Italian plan, part of the CO2 will be exported to Greece and stored in the Prinos hydrocarbon reservoir , off Kavala.

This storage site is being developed by Energean and is expected to have a capacity of 500,000 to one million tonnes of CO2. The €1 billion project has been included in the Recovery Fund and has also been proposed for inclusion in the EU Innovation Fund.

The Italian NECP states that the first CO2 exports to Greece may start in the first half of 2030.
