Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) has given shipping a glimpse of a new-look liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) tanker featuring elevated pressure cargo tankers.
NYK, along with affiliate Knutsen NYK Carbon Carriers (KNCC), is working with Nihon Shipyard to see if KNCC’s proprietary technology elevated pressure cargo tanks could lead to a 40,000 cu m design, far larger than existing LCO2 ships, which currently stretch to just 7,500 cu m in size.
Oliver Hagen-Smith, the CEO of KNCC, said the tanks feature vertical cylinders that can be mass-produced through automated processes using standard materials.
“This may optimise and reduce the construction time. The modular design potentially allows more shipyards to participate, utilising existing facilities and infrastructure, which broadens industry engagement and enhances efficiency,” Hagen-Smith said.
