Finnish green technology company Langh Tech has introduced a new onboard carbon capture (OCC) system designed to assist the maritime industry in its decarbonisation efforts.
Langh Tech’s system utilises a post-combustion technique where ship exhaust gases containing CO2 are captured and processed through an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution.
Following several consecutive reactions the CO2 is converted into sodium carbonate, a byproduct for various industries, thereby promoting a circular economy.
The OCC system is designed to be adaptable and scalable, offering customisable solutions for various ship types and sizes.
Langh Tech commercial director Laura Langh-Lagerlöf said: “The scarcity and significantly higher costs of carbon-neutral fuels are a substantial hurdle to the decarbonisation of shipping. It will take time until those fuels can be widely used and afforded.
“We are here to bridge this gap and help companies to decarbonise efficiently and according to their abilities.”
The success of the OCC system was demonstrated in a pilot project aboard a Langh Ship vessel in 2024, which confirmed that capture rates of 80% can be achieved from the exhaust gases.
The first commercial applications are scheduled for early 2025, with Damen Shipyards Group set to install the system on four bulk carriers.
These installations are part of a collaborative project aimed at retrofitting ships with technologies to reduce emissions while using traditional fuels, with the goal of cutting CO2 emissions by up to 60%.
Damen Shipyards Group business development manager Rutger van Dam said: “Langh Tech delivered on every front: a high capture rate, a high-value CO2 end product, and a significant reduction in emissions.
“From a commercial perspective, it made perfect sense. On a personal note, we share the same vision and goal: to greenify the global fleet. That alignment made Langh Tech the natural choice.”
