A pilot carbon dioxide capture unit will be installed at the AGET plant in Volos, as was highlighted in an event by the Heraklis Group organized yesterday afternoon at TEE Magnesia on the topic "The transition to the goal of a zero carbon balance".
In his statements to the journalists, Mr. Charalambos Kouris, Chemical Engineer at the two factories of the Group, with responsibility for the environment, noted that the specific event is taking place on the occasion of the visit of two groups of engineers to the factory in Volos within the framework of a European program approved by at the end of 2022 and started to be implemented from 2023 with the aim of developing carbon dioxide capture technology.
As he said, "it is a modern technology, which will help us as a cement industry and as a carbon dioxide emitter to reach the goals set by the EU. and Greece, in terms of reducing the carbon footprint. The aim is to highlight the issues of carbon dioxide capture technology and to develop the initiatives we have taken as a group for the strategy we have followed for the desulfurization of cement and concrete production".
Mr. Kouris added that "it is an opportunity for us to introduce to the society of Volos the approval of a large investment program that we received last year for the installation of a carbon dioxide capture unit for Milaki in Evia. Carbon capture technologies are now being developed and tested to see if they fit into the plant's design."
In fact, he clarified that "today we are running the program at the Volos factory and we will install a pilot carbon dioxide capture unit at the factory here in the city. In the coming years there will be an investigation and we expect new technologies to emerge." It should be noted that the height of the investment is 350 million euros.
Asked about the protest, Mr. Kouris emphasized that "We are here to talk about carbon dioxide capture technologies and not about alternative fuels. Alternative fuels are an issue that in previous years was a point of friction with the local community, but today we want to focus on what we present." It should be noted that the sanitary coverage of the event was undertaken by the EOD of Magnesia.
