Newly established Ocean Opt would offer “independent consultancy, data management and platform-based services” for fleet performance optimisation, emission trading systems and regulatory compliance such as the upcoming FuelEU Maritime regulation, it added in a statement released late on Wednesday (03 Jul 24).

The regulation, which was agreed in 2023 and will enter into force at the start of 2025, sets maximum limits for the yearly average greenhouse gas intensity of the energy used by ships above 5,000 gross tonnage calling at European ports.

Europe’s emissions trading scheme was extended to maritime transport on 1 January, applying to large ships departing from and arriving in EU ports regardless of their flag.

Companies working on decarbonising the European maritime industry told Montel earlier this week that shippers covered under the EU ETS are more likely to optimise their consumption than switch fuels.
