The DESFA - Energean plan for the transport and storage of CO2 grows

The large-scale plan to transport and store carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted by industries was presented earlier this month by EnEarth (Energean) and DESFA to the European Union.

This is the twin project Prinos – APOLLOCO2, which aspires to store quantities of carbon dioxide from Greece and abroad in the depleted Prinos deposit through the construction of appropriate infrastructure. In this way, an important solution will be implemented in our country for the first time that will allow the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, thus contributing to the achievement of Greek and European climate goals.

The two Greek groups have submitted their proposal to be included in the new list of projects of mutual and common interest (PCI-PMI), which is expected to be published soon. As it is emphasized, the aim is to support the European effort to create an entire network in the Mediterranean for the transport of CO2.

The Greek project has a budget of 2.17 billion euros, of which 843 million relate to transportation and liquefaction, while 1.3 billion euros will be spent on the underground storage facility.

As part of APOLLOCO2, which is being implemented by DESFA, gas will be transported from industries in Attica and Viotia to a central liquefaction plant in Revithoussa via pipelines, and then exported by ships. Initially, the network will be 200 km long and have a capacity of 5 million tons per year, while in a later phase it can be upgraded to 10 million tons. The goal is to put it into operation by 2029.
